Close-ups

Time stops for the fiddly part.

Some jobs are too small for a stage-wide view. Clipping a gel, seating the frame ears, turning the two captive screws under a camera baseplate: each opens its own close-up, and the schedule stops while it is open. It is the one place the game gives you the clock back, so the fiddly work is a pleasure rather than a penalty.

01   Build

The set grows while you work

It opens on a bare stage and one lighting call. Stand, head, gel, clips. Finish enough and camera opens, then grip, then effects, until all four are asking at once and the stage is full of gear you put there.

02   Change

Nothing stays built for long

Requests come in the words a set uses. Fly in the 4×4. Swap the floppy for the flag. Kill the haze. Pull the card. The label carries the jargon and the line under it says plainly what to do, so nobody is locked out of a joke they have not heard.

03   Strike

It comes off the way it went on

Striking is a job, not a button. The gel comes off before the head, the lens before the body, the rag before the frame. Reach for a parent with a child still on it and the game points at the child and changes nothing: "Lens first."

  • Blocked pieces say what has to come off first
  • A wrong reach costs you nothing but the seconds

LIGHTING

Key and cut

Stand, head, gels, C-47s, a sandbag on the leg and a scrim in the slot. CTB cools the key, CTO warms it, 216 widens and feathers it.

CAMERA

Body and glass

The body seats on the plate, the lens changes what the monitor sees, and the matte box, follow focus, onboard monitor and card all go on from there.

GRIP

Shape the light

A frame with a rag softens the beam or cuts it dead. A C-stand with a flag or a floppy takes a straight-edged bite out of the top of the key.

EFFECTS

Air and atmosphere

A fan you aim with one firm push, flapping the rag and the witness ribbon. A hazer that turns the key into a volume and drifts wherever the wind is going.

Career

A career that survives a bad shift.

Points bank as you go, and what is banked is kept even when the shift ends badly. The ledger carries a crew rank that shows on the header and on every wrap report. It gates nothing and unlocks nothing. It is a title, the way a title works on a set.

What do I need to play it?

An iPhone running iOS 17 or later, and one hand. It is portrait, it is played on your own, and it plays silently, so the sound can stay off. It does not run on iPad or Mac.

Do I have to know the gear?

No. Every request carries the set name on the label and the plain instruction underneath, so the jargon is a joke you get rather than a level you have to pass. Knowing what a C-47 is makes it funnier, not easier.

Who is it written for?

People who work in film and video production, and it assumes their vocabulary. It is not in a children's category and it is not directed at children, and it is rated on the App Store.

Is there anything to buy inside it?

No. Unlock Forever is $4.99, once, or you sign in with Cutvey if you are a member. There are no ads, no energy to wait for, no coins and nothing else to buy.

Where does my progress live?

On your phone, inside the game. Your progress, your scores and your settings are not sent to us, and there is no backup anywhere, so deleting the game loses them.

Is there a leaderboard?

No. There is no leaderboard, no score sharing, no player profile and nothing that shows one player's name to another. Your career record is yours and stays on the phone.
